Hall Natural Therapies

About Us

Hall Natural Therapies opened in November 2013 in Hall Village, moving to the farm in May 2019. Owned and operated by Anita Kilby to provide naturopathic services to the Hall district, Murrumbateman, Yass, Gungahlin, Belconnen and Canberra.

Anita grew up in Canberra and has lived in the Hall district since 1991 when she married and moved to her husband’s family farm just outside Hall. Anita’s original profession was accountancy, giving that up to be a full-time mum, which has proved very useful for the family businesses as well as for helping out with the Hall Preschool and Primary School P&C’s.

A lifelong interest in natural therapies was strengthened when Anita’s sons developed eczema as young children. Whilst the corticosteroids from the Doctor cleared the eczema it came straight back when they stopped using it. There obviously was more to it than fixing the outside skin surface. A visit to a naturopath quickly had the culprit identified – wheat. Taking wheat out of their diet soon had the eczema beat, and after staying away from wheat for some time they were able to eat it again without any problems.

With her two sons growing up, and feeling no compulsion to return to accounting, Anita wanted to do something new that was productive and useful. Studying naturopathy was the perfect answer. Anita loved learning about herbal medicine, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathophysiology and nutrition. It’s an ongoing learning journey. There is always something new to learn as research discovers more about how our bodies work, and how medicines, herbs, foods, nutrients, toxins, pollution etc. affect our bodies. Anita continues informal studies and regularly attends seminars and conferences on a wide variety of health topics.

What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy is holistic natural health care. The body is seen as a whole integrated system not just a collection of parts or systems. Therefore, the whole body is treated not just one organ or system. The body’s natural ability to heal and return to balance is supported. Naturopaths investigate the underlying causes of health concerns. We aim to identify and resolve anything that is reducing the body’s ability to heal and fix the cause not just the symptoms. Some causes include nutritional deficiencies or poor diet, impaired digestion, food intolerances, stress, hormonal imbalances, toxin overload, sleep disturbances, inadequate/excessive exercise, or even simply dehydration.

Naturopathy in Australia is now very much an evidence-based modality. There is a wealth of scientific research to support the use of many of the medicinal herbs and nutritional supplements. In fact, science and pharmaceutical companies are turning more frequently to traditional medicinal herbs in search of "new" treatment options. Occasionally there will have been little research into particular herbs, and so we base our use of them on the many hundreds of years of safe traditional use.

Naturopathy is Based on Six Principles

  1. The Healing Power of Nature

The body’s natural state is to be healthy, it has an inherent wisdom to heal itself.

  2. Identify and Treat the Casue

Find and resolve the underlying cause to achieve lasting health improvement. Symptoms are the body’s warning system, suppressing them doesn’t fix the problem.

  3. Treat the Whole Person

All factors affecting health are considered (physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual, environmental, occupational, etc.).

  4. First do no Harm

We use the most natural, least invasive and safest therapies to support the body’s own natural ability to heal

  5. Doctor as Teacher

We will educate, encourage and support your self-education and empowerment.

  6. Prevention

Our focus is on health, wellness, disease prevention and preventing disease progression..

Is Naturopathy for you?

To get the most benefit from a naturopathic approach to your health you need to be willing and prepared to take an active role in managing your health. We can and do offer support to improve your symptoms as quickly as possible. We will generally have a herb or supplement, as the Doctor will have a medication, that will improve your symptoms quickly. Often these treatments will be just as effective as medications, but with fewer side effects.

But where naturopaths really work wonders is in identifying the long term, ongoing, day-in-day-out changes you can implement to make lasting changes to your health. This requires commitment from you. If you simply want to pop a pill to fix things then the naturopathic approach may not be for you!

People often come to natural therapists as a last resort, when the Doctors have said there’s little more they can do. Ideally, see a natural therapist first, and perhaps avoid experiencing some of the unpleasant or harsh side effects of many medications.

If you’re already on several medications then we can work with your Doctor to hopefully reduce your medications as we achieve improvements in your health. We will carefully assess what treatments we can safely use with your medications, whilst providing continued symptom resolution throughout the process.
